 20 mln IPTV subscribers in Asia by 2009

According to IDC, the number of Internet Protocol Television (IPTV) subscribers in Asia/Pacific excluding Japan (APEJ) is expected to grow from nearly 500K subscribers in 2004 to over 20 mln subscribers by 2009 with an impressive CAGR of 110% -- We think this actually be low and a consercative estimate. A meaningless chart is shown below.

China's 1st IPTV License Open for Broadcasters, Telecom Operators

Since the Shanghai Media Group (SMG) got China's first license of Internet Protocol (IP) TV service this month, major broadcasters and telecom operators have been agitated by the breakthrough in this potentially lucrative field.

Unlike traditional cable or wireless TV, IPTV enables broadband Internet users to access TV broadcasting services on their computers or TV sets with a set-top box. Some advanced mobile phone users can also be IPTV users with the technological progress.

China now has about 320 million mobile phone users, 100 million cable TV subscribers, and nearly 23 million broadband Internet users. Analysts expect the country's broadband users to hit the 40 million mark this year.

The good news for North American and European equipment vendors: Chinese megavendors have yet to conquer IPTV. The bad news: They're working on it.

The "Big Three" -- which include Huawei Technologies Co. Ltd., ZTE Corp. (Shenzhen: 000063 - message board; Hong Kong: 0763) and UTStarcom Inc. (Nasdaq: UTSIE - message board) -- are grabbing market share worldwide in numerous infrastructure product categories and have good prospects for further expanding their reach, according to a new report from Light Reading Insider.
